How to Tie Your Belt
One of the first things you'll learn is how to properly tie your belt.
Watch our step-by-step belt tying video here.
The Traditional Method
- Find the center: Fold the belt in half to locate the exact middle.
- Start at your belly: Place the center point of the belt just below your belly button.
- Wrap it around: Take both ends behind your back, cross them, and bring them back to the front. The belt should be wrapped snugly around your waist twice without twisting.
- Tuck and layer: Cross the left end of the belt over the right end in front of you. Take that top end (the left one) and tuck it up and under both layers of the belt, bringing it up from bottom to top.
- Adjust length: Pull both ends snug until they are even in length.
- Tie the knot: Cross the left end over the right end again to create a basic cross. Loop the bottom end up through the center hole you created and pull both ends firmly outward (side to side) to tighten.
- Final check: Your knot should look like a flat square, with the ends pointing to the sides.
If you forget, don't hesitate to ask an instructor. We're always happy to help.

Belt Testing Information
Belt testing is an exciting opportunity to demonstrate the skills you've been working hard to develop. It's not just about learning techniques—it's about showing confidence, discipline, respect, and consistent effort.
Students become eligible to test when they have met the attendance and skill requirements for their current rank. The instructor will let you know when you're ready for your next belt test. You can review our Belt Testing process here.
To prepare, continue attending classes regularly, practice your techniques at home, and ask questions if there's anything you'd like to review. Belt testing is about demonstrating your personal progress—not competing with other students.
Before each testing cycle, be sure to review the requirements for your next rank. You can find the complete belt requirements, testing expectations, and additional resources on our Belt Requirements page.
We look forward to celebrating your achievements as you continue your martial arts journey, one belt at a time.
